Filter context in one minute
Why the same DAX measure shows different numbers in different places, in plain words. (Sample article: replace it with your own.)
A DAX measure does not have one answer. It has one answer per filter context: the set of filters that apply where the measure is shown.
A card with no filters shows the grand total. A matrix row for "Germany" adds the filter Country = Germany, so the same measure now shows only German sales. A slicer adds another filter on top.
The three things that create filter context
- Rows and columns of a visual
- Slicers and page or report filters
- Filters you add yourself inside the measure with CALCULATE
When a number looks wrong, ask first: which filters are applied here? That question solves most "wrong total" problems.
